Actually laughter is a biological response letting the other person know that you both are just playing and neither of you is a threat to the other. So actually laughter is your body’s way of saying to your friend “Please don’t kill me.”
but don’t people laugh when they’re alone? who are we asking not to kill us when we’re alone?
